The As Janelas Verdes Hotel is an eighteenth-century mansion that once belonged to famed writer José Maria Eça de Queiroz. It has been converted to a charming boutique hotel that provides a tranquil atmosphere overlooking a beautiful courtyard. The hotel preserved its eighteenth-century roots with wood-paneled walls, ornate armchairs, and antiques.

Eat pasteis, a local sweet, and cataplana, a mixed-seafood soup served in beautiful bronze dishes. To walk off those hearty regional dishes, explore the Belem neighborhood, the cultural center of museums, cathedrals, and spectacular views of nearby Tagus River, before taking in a fado show of mournful folk music akin to Portuguese flamenco. Shop for one-of-a-kind antiques at the Feira da Ladra flea market, open from dusk till dawn. The market, known for its idiosyncratic vendors, has offered designer pieces since 1882 for prices tailor-made for bargain hunters with a discerning eye. Find hand-crocheted doilies, embroidered napkins, large tablecloths, and even handmade espresso cups. Look out for pieces by Ana Salazar, the country’s premier designer.
